Install wordpress blog manually

WordPress is most popular open source CMS mostly used nowadays for publishing blogs. You can create a wonderful websites or blogs with the use wordpress. However some may realize that wordpress installation is a difficult task. But, it’s much easier than the people can believe getting it installed on their website. Here is the easier way to follow and get wordpress installed through FTP client with an ease. Let us assume you have domain name and hosting account. So we proceed further to install wordpress manually on your web site.

Wordpress hosting

Download wordpress and extract :

Get start with visiting on the wordpress site i.e. wordpress.org and search the link for “DOWNLOAD.ZIP”  on the site.  Click on this link and save it on your local machine as on the desktop so you can easily find whenever it will need further. Make sure that the version is the latest one – once downloaded extract the zip file.

FTP software:
Download the FTP client software (we recommend FileZilla) on your computer to upload the wordpress files on your hosting account. For uploading the files on your account you will require the FTP login details through which you can FTP to your account on your hosting server. FileZilla is most popular free FTP program used nowadays. Especially you will require the domain name, FTP username and FTP password information for accessing your server through FTP client software.

Setting up Mysql database:

Now you will need a database for your wordpress with database user and database password. You can create a database, database user and database password from your hosting cPanel control panel . Once the database is being set up, you’ll need this information of database name, database username and database password and database hostname further. Generally the database hostname is “localhost” but in some case it might be different so make sure with your hosting provider.  Save this information of database name, database username and database password and database hostname safely in the notepad as you will need this further.

Making entry of database information’s in your wordpress config file:

Now go to your local desktop where you have extracted your wordpress files. Open that folder named as “Wordpress”. You will find the file named wp-config-sample.php in this wordpress folder. Open this file in your favorite editor.  Search for especially the below lines in this file having these text. Here you have to edit these four lines by editing some changes with the database information you have saved previous.

Look specifically for the lines that read:

// ** MySQL settings – You can get this info from your web host ** //

/** The name of the database for WordPress */

define (‘DB_NAME’, ‘YOUR_DATABASE_NAME’);

/** MySQL database username */

define(‘DB_USER’, ‘YOUR_DATABASE_USER_NAME’);

/** MySQL database password */

define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘YOUR_DATABASE_PASSWORD’);

/** MySQL hostname */

define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’);

Here replace ” YOUR_DATABASE_NAME” with the database name. Replace “YOUR_DATABASE_USER_NAME” with your database user name. Replace “YOUR_DATABASE_PASSWORD” with your database password. Replace “localhost” with the database hostname mostly it’s the same “localhost” (Note: While editing these lines make sure to leave the single quotes ( ‘ ) before and after as it were appearing originally there).

Once you finish the editing then save this file as “wp-config.php” instead of wp-config-sample.php

Uploading the WordPress to your hosting account:
Now, it’s time to upload the wordpress files on your server. Open the FTP client program and get connected to your host’s server with the ftp information provided in the welcome email sent by your web hosting provider. After connecting to the server now make sure where you need to install wordpress on your website. Once you have decided the location then proceed and upload all the wordpress files and directories that you have been unzipped on your local desktop to the location you have selected.

Running wordpress install scripts:
Once all this files and directories get uploaded on your hosting account. Now open a web browser on your local computer. We assume that you have uploaded your files in root directory ( public_html ) of your host’s server then you have to access through the browser using URL:

http://www.yourdomainame.com/wp-admin/install.php

(Here replace yourdomainame.com with your actual domain name)

However if you have uploaded in your subdirectory of your account then you have to access through browser using URL:

http://www.yourdomainname.com/subdirectory/wp-admin/install.php

(Here replace yourdomainname.com with the your actual domain name and subdirectory with name of the subdirectory you have created)

After accessing this URL you have to just simply follow the onscreen instructions displayed on the page and proceed further and you will get all this done.

Congratulations! As you have now installed wordpress on your website.

Accessing your wordpress admin panel :
After filling this installation information’s now finally you have to access your wordpress through browser using your wordpress admin login details.

For example: the URL for this blog is:

http://www.yourdomainname.com/wp-admin

(Here replace yourdomainame.com with your actual domain name)

Now, if you have installed your WordPress blog in a subdirectory then you would tag on “wp-admin” as usual.

For example:

http://www.yourdomainname.com/subdirectory/wp-admin

(Here replace yourdomainname.com with your actual domainname and subdirectory with the name of directory you have created)

How to Edit/create/delete a file using a file manager?

The File manager feature in the cPanel allows you to create/edit/delete the files and folder in cPanel. You can use the cPanel to modify the files as you wish.

To modify the files through file manager follow the steps below,

  • Login to your cPanel. Click on the “File manager” Icons
  • By default the File manager will open to the user’s home directory. You have to select the public_html directory where you website files are located.
  • Locate the files and check the box to the next
  • You will find their option such as copy, move, delete, edit .
  • Click on the option you would like to do for you.

If you want to create a file or folder through the file manager, follow the steps below,

  • Login to your cPanel. Click on the “File Manager”
  • Choose the public_html directory where your websites files are located
  • Click on the “New File” or “New Folder” button.
  • Enter the name of new created file or folder. (Note: Folder will only have the specific name. Whereas the files will have the extensions separated by dot)
  • Now click on “Create New File” OR “Create new folder” button.

You will get your new file or folder created on your account through the File manager

What is a parked domain?

A parked domain is a domain that’s point to the site normally accessed by your primary domain without redirecting to your primary domain. The parked domain will display the same page of the main domain.

To create a parked domain follows the steps below:

  • Login to your cPanel. Click on Parked domain icon.
  • In the box to the “right of New Domain Name”, provide the domain name for which you would like to park on your primary domain.
  • Now just click Add Domain.

You will get the parked domain added to your account.

To remove the parked domain follow the steps below:

  • Login to cPanel . Click on Parked domain.
  • At the bottom there is option” Remove parked domain”. Click on this button”.

And you will get your parked domain removed from your account.

How to use the SpamAssassin ?

A SpamAssassin is a free program that’s comes with the cPanel and WHM installations. Its identify and filter the incoming spam mails that’s comes in your inbox based on the contents if email headers and body. Here below it show how to use it,

  • Login to your cPanel account.
  • Under “Mail” sections click on SpamAssassin icon.
  • Click on “Enable SpamAssassin” button and the SpamAssassin will start working. In cPanel its indicate “SpamAssassin is now: Enabled”
  • Click on Go_ Back link to go back to SpamAssassin Menu screen.
  • Click on “Configure Spam Assign. You will see the SpamAssassin Configuration screen.
  • Set “required_score” to 5 (this is the default setting)
  • for ” rewrite_header subject” type ” SpamAssassin Spam header” in the box(this is the text added to the subject : line of the mails are considered as spam
  • In whitelist_from” type any addresses that may get labeled as spam
  • Click on “save” to save the settings.

What is Index Manager? How to use the index manager?

Index Manager allows stopping people viewing your list of files in the folders though the browser. (If the index.html file does not present in your public_html folder then the users will see get the “Index of/” page while accessing your site through browser.   • Select the folder you wish to protect the directory from listing the files
  • Now select the “No indexing “option from the checkbox and click on SAVE.

Now your files within that directory can’t be able to view by the users through the browsers.

How to create an Mysql database using cPanel?

You can create a mysql database in cPanel following the steps below,

  • Login into cPanel . Scroll down to database section.
  • Click on Mysql database icon.  You will see the Create Database options.
  • Enter the new database name. The database name you have created will be automatically prefixed with cPanel username and an underscore (“_”). This will use to prevent database collision with other databases on server.
  • The database will be created on your and you will get database is added. But before you using this database you should have to create database user.
  • Scroll down you will see “Add a new users “here add username and password and click on Create user. You will get the message the added user database username with the password. Now go back.
  • After creating a database user. Now scroll down. And there is option “Add user to database”
  • Here select the appropriate database username and database pair.  Click on “Add “button. Now you will have to select “All the privileges” and make changes.

What is hot linking? How to use the hotlinking protection in my cPanel?

Hotlinking protections allow protecting your websites files and images from directly linking from the others websites.

Example: If you have image on your site and someone like this image. They want to have this image on their site. So they will just use the path of your image URL in my website and I will get this image on my site. Now whenever their visitors will access their website this image then this image will get downloaded from your server and your bandwidth be used. Its means your bandwidth will be stolen indirectly without your attendance. So when you are enabling a Hotlink protection, then no one can steal your bandwidth anymore on your website.

To enable the hotlink protections on your site follow the steps,

  • Login to your cPanel account.
  • Under “Security” option Click on the “Hotlink Protection” icons
  • Make sure the domain you want to protect in the box “URLs allow to access”
  • Scroll down. In the box “Block direct access for these extension like i.e jpg,jpeg,gif,bmp,flv,avi,mov, etc. Enter the extensions of all files types you want to protect here separated by commas.
  • Also check the box for “Allow direct requests”.
  • Now in “Redirect request to this URL” enter the URL where the outside users you want to be get redirected while they are attempting to follow to hotlinks to your protected files.
  • They will get redirected somewhere else. Enter the URL if redirection destination here.
  • Now Click on the” Submit “button

Now you have protected you image or files from being getting hotlink from other websites. Just make sure that you have enter your entire additional domain in the Hot link List.

How to view disk space usage in cPanel?

You can view directly your overall disk space usage from main page of cPanel .  Although for viewing details disk usage consumed by the directories on your hosting account. Under File section there is option “Disk space usage”. Click on this icon.

Now this feature will display you all the summary of your disk space usage of your directories within your account.  It s very useful for checking which directory of your account is consuming more disk space and makes your reach your quota.  The disk Usage Summary section will show the first level of sub directories and how much disk space they are occupying in your home directory.  Now scroll down and click on +Increase depth button and you will see the directory which is consuming more space on your account.
